Kalief Browder (1993-2015)

Long Island City, Queens, New York. 2015

“This Happens Every Day.”

This mural, painted with Caleb Neelon, memorializes the life and death of Kalief Browder, who, as a teenager, spent about two years in solitary confinement at Rikers Island. He tragically committed suicide in 2015, a result of the emotional trauma he suffered during his confinement.

The quote, “This happens every day,” came from an interview with Kalief and Marc Lamont Hill.
